Oh, the nightmare of showing up at the airport and realizing you don’t have your ID on you. Immediate problem solve mode – I was guided to a process I was told is called a “No ID issue”.
Below are the steps you’ll go through (traveling within the US) each airport will be a bit different:
- Get in line as normal. When it’s your turn to present your ID to security, let the individual know you have an ID issue, they’ll tell you to stand aside for a bit until someone comes to assist.
- Two credit/debit cards in your name to present at a minimum, but another type of ID such as school or work will help the situation on top of that.
- If you’re at an airport with tighter security, you’ll fill out a form with your basic information.
- They’ll take that form and call another department that will look you up and give them details on what seemed to be physical appearance like height, age, etc. They’ll then ask personal questions to answer and relay over the phone – they’ll ask things only you would know.
- After you pass the information test, you’ll be guided through security the whole way with the TSA member almost like a VIP skipping the line. They’ll then take all of your bags aside to swipe and inspect them thoroughly.
- After your bags pass the test, you’re able to re-organize them and be on your merry way!
I DO NOT recommend leaving your ID at home on purpose. You’ll be restricted at places that require ID checks for entry or drinking an alcoholic beverage whether you look the age or not. Not to mention IDs are required for Hotel check-ins, renting a car, and so much more while traveling. There are some states that are switching to digital IDs but its always best to have your physical state ID on hand.
Happy Travels!
