To earn points for Marriott Bonvoy bookings, you will need to book directly through Marriott Bonvoy in order to earn points. You will not be able to redeem points through room blocks, or bookings through third party sites. Rates on Expedia and Hotels.com are comparable to booking direct with the Hotel group.

When booking + checking into a Marriott Bonvoy property, you will have the opportunity to earn points for your stay. You can earn up to 10 points per $1 spent on a Marriott Bonvoy top tier property. See HERE to view other tiers and point rewards.

You can also choose to earn miles for partner Airlines, 1-2 miles per $1 depending on the property (View HERE for partner Airlines + mile rewards – scroll to the bottom of linked page), when booking with Marriott Bonvoy.

Marriott Bonvoy points can be transferred to partner Airlines, but the better news is that most airlines transfer ratio is 3:1.

If you’re wondering what the better rewards option would be, lets run through an example: Let’s say we booked Le Meridien for $750 stay. if we earned AAdvantage miles for this stay, we would earn 1,500 miles. If we stayed with earning Marriott Bonvoy points, we would earn 10 points per $1 spent, which would be 7,500 points. If at a later time we decided to transfer those points to American Airlines, the 3:1 ratio would have earned us 2,500 miles which would be the better transfer ratio rather than earning AAdvantage miles from the start for the booking.

Redemption Ratios

For the sake of the example, if you are someone who then stays at Marriott Bonvoy exclusively or consistently, then we will want to dig a little deeper. For AAdvantage, members earn 1.6 cents per 1 mile. So the redemption of the 2,500 points transferred to AAdvantage would equal $40. If we kept the 7,500 points for our stay and did not transfer them to AAdvantage, we would earn .9 cents per 1 Marriott Bonvoy point which would equal $67.50. Therefore, you would benefit from utilizing the Marriott Bonvoy points for future Hotel stays.
